Students and families, we didn’t forget about you! To continue our series of sharing STEM resources, we’ve put together a list of ways for you to stay connected with exciting science topics during your upcoming winter break. These are all activities that you can do without leaving the house; perfect for those chilly winter days!
Online
- SciShow is a YouTube channel that posts short, engaging videos on a variety of topics spanning biology, chemistry, physics, technology, and more. You can scroll through a list of more than 1000 videos to find a topic that interests you! For younger pre-scientists, SciShow Kids highlights topics such as animals, the weather, and how to design a science experiment that you can do in your own home!
- Eighth grade teacher Tom McFadden hosts Science With Tom, a YouTube channel sharing information about famous scientists (including Rosalind Franklin and Johannes Kepler) and interesting science topics (such as planets, evolution, and cells) – in song! If science rap battles sound intriguing to you, you’re in the right place!
In Person
- Set up an experiment in your own home! There are many resources on the web that list science experiments that you can do using items commonly found in your house, such as water, toothpicks, cardboard tubes, and sugar and salt from your kitchen. You’ll learn that there are tons of fun ways to explore new scientific concepts without leaving home!
- In the spirit of the season, there are also many science experiments you can do that are winter-themed! Some easy experiments using objects you already have at home are this “Life Cycle of a Snowman” experiment to study the difference between solids, liquids, and gases; and this experiment explaining why we salt sidewalks in the winter!
- Support your child’s creativity by visiting museums, libraries, zoos, nature centers, or other venues in your community that promote informal science education.
